Textbroker is a fantastic freelance writing site if you want to get started right away. You’ll find a huge list of jobs on different topics that are looking for writers just like you. Just fill out your profile, browse jobs, and submit bids when you’re ready. With Textbroker, it takes less than 5 minutes to get started.
What more could you ask for? The great thing about Textbroker is that they accept all levels of experience. If you’re new to freelance writing or want to write about something specific, there are lots of opportunities at Textbroker! It’s also worth noting their contracts pay weekly (or even daily), which is awesome if you need money quickly. The only issue I have with Textbroker?
They don’t offer as many positions in niche fields such as academic writing; however, given how easy it is to join, you may find other sites that are better suited. Overall, Textbroker is a top-notch freelance job board with strong payment packages and tons of available positions. Simply put: if you’re a writer looking for work look no further than Textbroker!
2) Elance
Elance is one of many freelance sites that helps businesses and individuals find writers, editors, translators, virtual assistants, and another online talent to help with various tasks. Elance currently has 3 million users, who post over 2 million jobs each year and conduct over $1 billion in the freelance business. The site boasts users from 70 different countries who speak 80 different languages.
One major benefit of using Elance for freelance writing is how quickly you can start earning money. You can get started immediately by creating a profile and uploading your resume or CV, then bidding on projects or applying for openings within companies.
Once you’ve been hired for a job, the payment goes directly into your bank account upon completion of work usually within 48 hours of signing off on an assignment. With its ease of use and transparent payment system, Elance is a great place to start if you want to begin freelance writing as a side gig or earn extra cash. Plus, it’s 100% free!
3) Fiverr
Fiverr’s premise is simple: you can sell any service or product for $5 on their marketplace. Whether you’re looking to get an animated video made, design a logo, or write an entire essay (like we did!), Fiverr has got you covered.
If your skills are more suited to written content, try one of these freelance writing sites instead. The top freelance writing websites right now are Upwork, Guru, and Textbroker. With thousands of registered users around the world, you will find everything from custom logo design to legal advice at reasonable prices.
Hire freelancers with high ratings and positive reviews or post a job offer yourself; if you’re new to hiring people online, start with Upwork! You'll need to sign up and verify your account before creating jobs – it only takes about five minutes.
From there, create a gig that explains what you want to be done and how much you're willing to pay. When potential clients respond, choose which ones to interview and hire, then manage all aspects of the job through Upwork's easy-to-use interface. 4) Odesk
Odesk has over a million freelance writing jobs and assignments to choose from. Depending on your level of experience, you can expect to make anywhere from $5 per 500-word assignment to $20 per hour or more.
Payment is made at different milestones throughout each project (usually every milestone within 30 days of completion). You must be an active freelancer with previous feedback to request payment. As with most platforms, there’s risk involved if you get a bad reviewer, they could torpedo your rating.
Also, keep in mind that some employers don’t trust sites like Odesk; many employers prefer to work directly with freelancers. This makes it difficult for newbies without any reviews to break into higher-paying gigs. That said, if you hustle and show you have a strong work ethic right off the bat, you should do fine here!
5) Scripted
Scripted is one of my favorite sites. It was created with freelance writers in mind, and it really delivers on that premise. While you can use Scripted to find work, I also like to use it as a resource for getting work done. The site is focused on short-term projects rather than long-term jobs, which makes it an excellent place to find gigs that are quicker than full-on book projects but don’t require you to take on any extra risk.
You know what else? The pay is pretty good, too. Just fill out your profile, read over the job listings and see if anything sparks your interest. You never know you might be surprised at what you find! If nothing here catches your eye, go ahead and create a listing of your own; best case scenario, someone will bite and hire you! And who knows? Maybe next year you’ll get to write about Scripted when they make it onto our top 10 list for 2022! (Don’t worry about making sure everything is spelled correctly; it won’t get past us.)
6) Lionbridge
Lionbridge is one of my personal favorite freelance writing sites. In a sea of competitors, Lionbridge makes it to my list because they offer a high-quality job board and great rewards for those who complete projects. To get started, you need to create an account and apply for their freelance writer program.
Once accepted, you will have access to some jobs posted through Lionbridge’s portal as well as opportunities with other clients across various industries. Some of these may be directly submitted by clients looking for writers, while others are placed by Lionbridge based on your qualifications.
It’s good to note that these projects are paid at market rates rather than company rates so you may see lower or higher payments depending on project details and duration. Best-paying products start at USD 100 per hour (with exceptions). They accept all skill levels from professionals seeking additional experience to beginners looking to build up a portfolio and earn extra cash on the side.
7) Eatingwell
A great place to start as a freelance writer, EatingWell is owned by Men’s Health and Women’s Health. They publish articles on nutrition, food safety, restaurant reviews, and more. It’s a site that can be easily accessed from any device and has a good track record with freelancers getting paid quickly.
However, competition for assignments is tough but only if you plan to write about healthy living. You can also pitch their content at conferences or through their newsletter. Or you could just sign up for an account and hang out in their forums there are lots of Foodies hanging out there who may have ideas they want writing up! Beware that it’s not currently super active, so take advantage of chat opportunities when you see them. Two things to know:
The next step is applying for writing jobs which should involve creating a freelancer profile, which allows editors to peruse your past published works, awards/credentials (if applicable), rate per word/hour (on average) then sit back and wait patiently until someone wants something created.
8) Remotewriting
Remote writing is one of the best freelance writing sites available. It has a great reputation, and it’s very easy to find work. If you are looking for work as a freelancer, you can get started here. To apply, you need to have three pieces of writing that have been published online. Once you meet that requirement, you will be approved instantly to begin working with them.
There are no restrictions on what kind of material you write; just as long as it meets their guidelines regarding quality and format. You get paid every Friday via PayPal or direct deposit depending on your preference. Freelancers who put in at least 25 hours per week can request time off; they also receive 15 percent off services offered by them such as web design help or copy editing. This company offers everything an independent contractor could want except higher pay.
Their pay rate is only USD 12 per hour though I do appreciate their transparency about payment upfront. They take 0% of your earnings, which is pretty impressive! However, because of low pay rates and stringent requirements (such as needing 3 samples before being accepted), I would suggest starting somewhere else if you are serious about doing freelance writing full-time.
9) Contently
This is a one-stop-shop for freelance writers and content marketers. For $50/month, you can upload your portfolio and start bidding on open jobs that match your skills. If you’re an expert in a niche but don’t have much experience writing, you can start by taking Contently’s online course to learn how to pitch clients.

10. WriterBay
This site has over 300,000 writers and is free to sign up. It’s a place for freelancers to connect with content creators such as bloggers and businesses. Those seeking freelance work can browse assignments and bid on those they’re interested in.
Once you create an account, WriterBay recommends some interesting articles to read on topics like writing better headlines or helping clients plan out their editorial calendar. After that, it’s pretty straightforward to start bidding on jobs and get paid quickly, too! Remember, there’s no upfront cost to using most of these sites.
